Home Portraiture Session by Alec Kirkham

I did a home portraiture photo session for the Armstrong family at the weekend. The 2 children Alistair (almost 2yrs) and Rose (3 months) were to be the main focus however we also made time for some family shots also. As these pictures were taken in the clients own home I had some setup to do before hand.

I thought it would be useful to list the equipment used and set-up for this shoot.

  • 5 Light stands (2 background, 2 lights, 1 reflector)
  • 1 Background support bar
  • 2 Backgrounds (black velvet & mottled brown)
  • 4 background clamps
  • 2 canon 580ex II speedlights
  • 3 Pocketwizard Plus 2
  • 1 Westcott Appollo Softbox (Camera left)
  • 1 Round light reflector / 1 Sheet of white card
  • 1 Sekonic L-358 light meter
  • 1 Canon 5d MK II
  • 2 Canon 24-105mm F4 IS
  • plus a lot of patience

I set my background and lights up within the couples living room. The main light was inside the Westcott soft box camera left and the reflector was place camera right to provide a fill light. My other speedlight was place behind the subject (camera right to provide a hair/separation light) this light had no light modifier attached just direct. Both flash units were set to manual and I dialled in the required power setting using my Sekonic light meter with built in Pocketwizard module (approx ISO 400, F8 @ 1/125th Sec). After everything was set up (approx 15 minutes) the rest was all down to working with the subjects which usually involves becoming an entertainer and photographer at the same time.

After the photoshoot I select 88 images that I then edited in Lightroom and Photoshop and then supplied to the family on a DVD.
