Fernie Castle Wedding – Alec Kirkham

I had a fantastic day photographing Lauren and Craig’s wedding day which was set in the spectacular grounds of Fernie Castle close to St Andrews. The weather was good all be it a bit breezy; however that did not put the couple off from having their wedding ceremony outdoors. The day of the wedding was the first time I had met either Lauren and Craig, they were a lovely couple and very at ease getting their picture taken and along with the rest of their family and friend they all made me feel very welcome.

The Balancing Act by Alec Kirkham

The balancing act. When photographing high-key portraits there is always a fine balance to get your exposure correct on your subject at the say time getting your background to be pure white. You may just think to turn your background lights up to be as bright as possible thus ensure pure white however you will quickly realise that throwing too much light on the background will have an effect on your subjects exposure and it go go too far then not only will you burn out the background but you will loose edge definition on your subject(s) also. So this balancing act it a challenge when doing high-key portraits however the benefits are well worth it when it come to editing images and creating montages (add multiple images into one seamless image) as the example below demonstrate.

Ensuring I capture in camera a pure white background, with a consistent subject exposure and focal length I can very simply create this style of image.

McIntosh Studio Photoshoot by Alec Kirkham

A few pictures taken from the McIntosh studio photoshoot. For only £90 they received a 1 hours photoshoot using professional studio lighting and camera equipment in order to capture the highest quality digital images. These full sized high resolution images are then reviewed and the best images are selected before being fully edited using photoshop. This editing process is used to enhance the images with processes such as blemish removal, skin smoothing, teeth whitening, etc, before being copied onto DVD. The customer can then use these images without any copyright restrictions to create their own wall art canvas, fill their photo frames, display on digital frames or simply share on Facebook or any other social media sites.

Unlike some other photographers that hold on to the copyright of your images and charge for each print and approx.£25 for a single copy of a digital image my customers get them all as part of the £90 package. For example during this photoshoot 390 images were taken and from these 185 images were selected, edited and supplied on a DVD. Some photographer may only charge £25 for a photoshoot, but to get a copy of all the digital images it would cost you over £4600.

My Own Studio Photoshoot

It’s been a long journey but I got there in the end. The new studio is now fully kitted out and I have ran my first full day of family/children studio shoots.

Having a full sized background (almost 3m) with a wall mounted roller system makes switching out background colours a breeze :). The studio lights and softboxes give me some really nice soft lighting and the length of the studio means I can use my favourite lens (Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS) and still get the whole family into the shot.

Here are a few shots from the studio setup at the weekend and you can see the results below
